Tuttavia, le forme progressive continuano a presentare grandi sfide, poich\u00e9 le terapie ad oggi disponibili risultano meno efficaci rispetto a quelle per la forma recidivante-remittente.<\/p>\n<p>Nella&nbsp;<strong>sclerosi multipla<\/strong>&nbsp;il sistema immunitario attacca e danneggia la mielina, la guaina protettiva attorno alle fibre nervose, causando l\u2019interruzione dei messaggi nel cervello e nel midollo spinale.<\/p>\n<p>Nelle forme progressive le cellule macrofagi e le cellule della microglia presenti nel sistema nervoso centrale svolgono un ruolo chiave in questo processo, causando infiammazione cronica e danni alle cellule nervose.<\/p>\n<p>Un nuovo studio condotto sulla funzione di queste cellule dal Professor <strong>Stefano Pluchino<\/strong> dell&#8217;Universit\u00e0 di Cambridge ha portato alla scoperta di un meccanismo <strong>non ancora conosciuto<\/strong> che potrebbe aprire nuove strade per il trattamento delle forme progressive di sclerosi multipla. Pubblicato sulla rivista <em>Nature<\/em>, lo studio ha individuato il ruolo centrale del complesso mitocondriale, una componente dei mitocondri \u2013 le \u201ccentrali energetiche\u201d delle cellule \u2013 nell\u2019attivazione dell\u2019infiammazione cronica a carico delle cellule nervose.<\/p>\n<p>Inibendo questo complesso, i ricercatori hanno osservato effetti neuroprotettivi nei modelli sperimentali. Questo risultato apre la porta a nuove strategie terapeutiche in grado di rallentare la progressione della malattia e migliorare i risultati funzionali dei pazienti.<\/p>\n<p>Come ha spiegato il Professor Pluchino, mirare ai mitocondri rappresenta una promettente via per ridurre i danni alle cellule nervose, offrendo una speranza non solo per la sclerosi multipla progressiva, ma anche per altre malattie neurodegenerative.<\/p>\n<p>Il dottor Luca Peruzzotti-Jametti, primo autore dello studio, ha sottolineato come questa scoperta rappresenti un passo significativo nella comprensione dell&#8217;interazione tra metabolismo mitocondriale e infiammazione del cervello. Specificando che una nuova classe di terapie mirate all\u2019attivit\u00e0 del complesso mitocondriale nella microglia offre speranza per un futuro migliore per le persone con disturbi neurologici cronici.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Il sostegno di aziende come la tua \u00e8 cruciale per permettere alla ricerca scientifica di compiere nuovi progressi.
